Random memories

The annual Easter Egg hunt, when dozens of Cadbury's Creme Eggs were hidden around the grounds ... Standing at the window of Mrs Cooper's classroom and watching the felling of the enormous horsechestnut tree in the grounds behind the school, in preparation for the building of the housing estate ... Piling into 'the van' for the trip to Fred Lancaster's transport caff at lunchtime ... The day when the gas pipe to our classroom heater was accidentally knocked off by one of us at breaktime and the whole class was caned by Mr Broome. And does anyone remember one of the teachers, Mr E.S. Lovelady (we decided his initials stood for Ebeneezer Scrooge)?

"Mr John"

John Broome, known to us as Mr John, taught Geography. He was the son of the headmaster and used to flick pieces of chalk at us if he found our attention wandering. This article (from Cheshire Life, Vol. 59(5), May 1993) mentions Somerville amongst some of his better-known enterprises.
