Random memories

The annual Easter Egg hunt, when dozens of Cadbury's Creme Eggs were hidden around the grounds ... Standing at the window of Mrs Cooper's classroom and watching the felling of the enormous horsechestnut tree in the grounds behind the school, in preparation for the building of the housing estate ... Piling into 'the van' for the trip to Fred Lancaster's transport caff at lunchtime ... The day when the gas pipe to our classroom heater was accidentally knocked off by one of us at breaktime and the whole class was caned by Mr Broome. And does anyone remember one of the teachers, Mr E.S. Lovelady (we decided his initials stood for Ebeneezer Scrooge)?

As a former pupil 1954-59, I am interested to know whether this rather moribund blog has any customers ? If so there is much that could be discussed.

I attended in the early sixties . Remember Mr broome Snr-never knew his 1st name-John Broome( geography-"Kent hops used to make beer , wheat oats and Barley")Mr Broome Snr was fond of the cane , or beating us on our behinds with his fist . He used to top and tail his pen or chalk on his desk , and say"Will you put your pens down " during arithmetic lessons. Miss Davies , mrs Collins were the only other teachers I recall . In my class were :Donald Hughes(pod) , Roderick Gibson and Baynton , Paul Smith , Babs ,Terry Paine ( left handed and got stick for this from Mr Broome Snr) , John Haughton , Richard Jenner , Joan Rushton , David Eaton . From the class above me...Jonathon Gee , trevor Powell and Roland ???...the lunch time trek to Lancaster caff in the battered old van and Mr Broome Snr's Humber I remember well .One hand one bounce was played in the playground in the days of the "superball" and "johnny seven "gun . I am Nicholas Tragheim " Trashcan"and would be glad to hear from old acquaintances

Nick's staff names, apart from old Broome, all unknown to me. He almost never caned, always two-handed bottom-smacking. I remember Lovelady, mentioned above, starting work - he made a weak joke about it being 'the name, not the profession'. The van to Fred Lancaster's cafe was a Bedford brake.

Hi I'm Dilys Thompson (nee Parry) and would love to hear from anyone who remembers me. I was born 1958 so was at Somerville from around 1963 until it closed. I remember Mr Broome ... Remember his cane (although glad to say was never on the receiving end of it). Remember Mrs Collins .... Her son Paul was often caned by Mr Broome. Also remember Mr John taking us in the old van to Lancaster cafe .... all piled in the back. Then when there weren't many of us we'd go in Mr Broome's old car. I remember at break times playing on 'the log' which was an old fallen tree in the grounds. Remember there being an old rocking horse at the top of the old staircase (out of bounds). Remember there being a prize of a tube of smarties for the child with the shiniest shoes on a Friday.

It was a fab school. I can remember multiplying pounds, shillings and pence when I must have been only about 7.

Happy days :)

I have a colour photo of old Mr Broome & me, a b&w photo, multi page brochure of Somerville when it was still a boarding school (received on day the school was closed), an old Somerville school report, and wait for it ..... my old school badge (as shown in photo of Mr Broome mentioned above). Now all we need is to work out how to get the photos posted, probably facebook might be best. I will do it and advise. Who remembers the fantastic dens we used to build in the woods, the bike shed, the little cottage where the teachers used to live. I am going to put pen to paper and write down my thoughts and memories, this is an exciting day for me. I don't know what made me put the search for Somerville into google, I've never found anything before. I see I'm mentioned in one of the posts too, yippee I'm famous too. Will be back in touch, Roderick Gibson, Shropshire - just listening to a little Pink Floyd.

Hi William Jack here
I attended the school from 1958 to 1964. I remember the Bedford van taking us to the cafe where the food was appalling. I recall playing football till late in the summer, I think old Broome used to forget about us. He would rush out and shout " all in " and clap his over sized hands. I remember his black cape which made him look like an eagle from behind . The people I remember most are , brothers Ken and Roland, David Beech, Rich Hawk , a curly haired girl called Elizabeth who once let me catch her when we played kiss chase. Chris Pope whose dad was a Vicar. Many more but cant recall their names sorry. I think I have a couple of pictures,I will post them on facebook if we ever have our own site.

Richard Hawkes will you come here. Bloody Broome. Horrible old bastard. Used to basically beat people's arses with his fists. Roland Evans was far too old to be there but a good laugh. And I remember that left handed lad. Poor sod ! Jonny Gee was in my class. Melinda Ingray and Moira Robson ! I got into trouble over them !!!

I remember you Roderick. Richard Hawkes here

Sorry I misspelt your name. As I am sure you know spelling was never my strong suit.

At Somerville 1953-59. I suppose Ric's Melinda Ingray is a sister of the brothers Andrew and Adrian. Who remembers the Somerville career of famous actor Nikolas (sic) Grace of Brideshead Revisited fame ?
